What Is The Biggest Animal Ever To Exist On Earth?
Blue Whale

It is a popular perception that dinosaurs were the largest animals to have inhabited our planet. However, let me tell you that the blue whale is the largest known animal on Earth. In fact, one of the largest known dinosaurs, sauropod Argentinosaurus, weighed a little more than half of a blue whale. From its head to tail, a blue whale can measure from 75 feet to 100 feet which is as long as an 8 to 10 storeyed building. It weighs around 190 tons, the equivalent weight of 112 adult male giraffes. Baby blue whales are larger than most animals.

At birth, the babies weigh more than an elephant! Research shows that the babies add approximately 200 pounds every 24 hours. Female blue whales generally weigh more than the males and the largest blue whale till date is a female which weighed around 177 tons. The head of a blue whale is so wide that almost 50 people can stand side by side on its tongue. The heart is roughly the size of a small car. To sustain its huge size a blue whale has to consume close to 4 tons of krill — tiny creatures like shrimps — every day. Since the 1960s, blue whales have become a highly endangered species, with experts pointing out that their numbers are not expected to increase.

Did you know

Though we can’t hear them, blue whales are one of the loudest animals on Earth. The sound they produce can be compared with that of a jet engine. They can communicate with each other 1,600km away.

Blue whales eat 4-6 tonnes of krill a day (equivalent to the weight of an elephant — the largest land animal )

The spray from a blue whale's blowhole is almost as tall as a three-storey building (30 feet). A toddler can easily fit into its blowhole.
