What Is Cloning?
Dolly the sheep (above) was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell

To put it simply, cloning involves a number of different processes that can be used to produce genetically identical copies of a biological entity. The copied material, which has the same genetic makeup as the original, is referred to as a clone. But it’s not that simple. It took scientists decades to perfect the process that led to the successful birth of Dolly the sheep (the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell.)

There are three different types of artificial cloning: gene cloning, therapeutic cloning and reproductive cloning. Gene cloning is the use of highly specialised deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) technology to produce multiple, exact copies of a single gene or other segment of DNA to secure sufficient material to examine for research purposes. Therapeutic cloning produces embryonic stem cells for experiments aimed at creating tissues to replace injured or diseased ones. The third type of cloning, reproductive cloning, is the one that has received the most attention.

This technique is used to produces copies of whole animals. Apart from Dolly the sheep many other animals such as rats, mice, cows, chickens, cats, dogs, horses, mules, oxen and rabbits have been cloned using this process. Clones can happen naturally also – identical twins are just one of many examples. Of course, many worry that scientists will perfect cloning to the point where it’s possible to clone an existing human being. However, experts note that modern science is a long way from being able to achieve this feat.
