How Do Birds Know When And Where They Have To Migrate?

Most often it is the length of daytime and temperature that makes birds aware that it is time to migrate. During winter as the temperature drops, they start flying to warmer places. Some scientists argue that there is an innate mechanism which gives them the cue to migrate. Some birds develop a certain kind of migratory restlessness when they know their cousins are migrating. Research shows there are a couple of reasons that help birds figure out routes for migration. Some birds have magnetite-based receptors above their nostrils which help them to use Earth’s magnetic field as a compass. Earth’s magnetism is strongest at the poles and progressively weaker towards the Equator. Birds may identify north-south directions by sensing differences in the strength of Earth’s magnetic field. Some of them make use of landscapes, like mountains, coastlines and even motorways to navigate. Others use the position of the sun and stars to decide which way to go. Even nocturnal birds use the position of the sun at sunset to know their position. Yet others learn about the routes from their parents. The sense of smell also helps certain birds to navigate their routes.

They know the path by watching the direction of the sun, and rest at the night. They always go in a group if they want to go somewhere.
