Sowmya: Are Homework And School Bags Burden On Students?

I seriously believe that no homework and no school bag would be a good move! In fact it should be made mandatory for all schools. In many cases, children carry school bags weighing more than 15 per cent of their body weight.

Lugging such a heavy burden daily on their back at such a young age can create severe health problems for kids, like back pain, neck pain and worse, it may even change body posture leading to fatigue. Always remember that the bones are still in a formative stage, so we should not exert too much pressure on them. Not only that, it may lead to chronic problems later in life.

On the other hand, homework makes the brain passive and suppresses creativity, innovation and the power to analyse. Schools must give homework, but it should be minimal; it should help them in enhancing their learning abilities and aid in the improvement of writing abilities. Schools abroad, most of the time, lessen the burden of books by giving creative computer programmes as homework to reignite interest in studies.

For a change, the government is now bringing about a change by implementing a ‘no homework, no schoolbag’ programme up to class II. A path-breaking move, it will give children a chance to enjoy their childhood which, in turn, will enable them to grow into healthy and intellectually better citizens of the country.

Books should be replaced with computers in school so the students need not struggle to carry books. There should be pre loaded e-books in computers and the computers must be secure in order to prevent its malfunction due to security problems that may arise. The government should take this initiative to provide computers in schools in rural areas while the schools in the city must put this into action to prevent students from suffering with physical illnesses caused due to heavy bags
