Siddhi: What Is True Feminism?

As women march out onto the streets, demanding equal pay and the air fills with shouts of #MeToo, another faint whispering nibbles at the ears of us proud feminists. Hashtags like #NotAllMen and #FemiNazi make dark clouds of doubt hinder our movement. We turn back, horrified at the misrepresentation and misinterpretation of our originally rightful campaign, only to see some of our own staring back at us. Yet, there’s a difference. A thin line lies between misandry and feminism, and in this age of social media uproars and trends, it becomes essential to define this line.

Misandry is the belief that women are superior to men, feeding from an inherent hatred against the male gender. Feminism, however, is the belief of equality. The UN speeches of Emma Watson or the inspiring words of Malala Yousafzai, capture perfectly the essence of true feminism. Feminism is not only beneficial to women since it promotes equality in all senses, it protests against toxic masculinity, and urges men to be more open, vulnerable and sensitive.

Feminism believes that the future is equal and dedicates itself to lifting other women, of all colours, shapes, and sexualities up.

The feminist wave is taking over. And the world is ready to take a swim!
