Shourya Shrivastava: Is It Still A Patriarchal Society?

Women are treated as objects, while men are valued as human beings. Isn't it odd how men made laws such as, “freedom to pursue their happiness,” but at home everything revolve around the man as if he is king. No one except the man is free to pursue happiness at home. Have you seen a man changing surnames for woman or man taking care of babies and allowing their wives to work? Or women being the head of the family? The very fact that most women take the man's last names when they marry, and almost no men take the woman's last name, is proof that we still live in a patriarchal society. One of the definitions of a patriarchy is that "descent is traced through the male line." Even when a woman keeps her last name, the child still almost always takes the father's last name. How is that not a patriarchy? Then throw in that women are not paid as much as men for the same work even when they are equally qualified, that women are much more likely to be raped than men, and that men hold far more positions of power than women. What are your views?

VERY WELL SAID Shourya! i am also an aspiring social activist for women empowerment, so for me you have written something of utmost importance in this world. It is indeed a patriarchal society. people are usually worried that if they dont have a son their family will disappear, it would have no "varis". another reason for female foeticide and infanticide. great article keep up the good work!

Exactly! You spoke my thoughts! It is very true. Even I have always been bothered by the fact that women are usually forced to take the man''s surname after marriage and many many many other such examples where women are discriminated against. Take a simple example, women are considered less capable physically as compared to men. This is prevalent even in sports events in our school, where in long jump, shot put, etc, the qualifying distance for girls is much lesser than that for boys.

Many might argue that women are intellectually more capable, but it seems that even there, there is unequality. An instance would be that women are paid lesser than men in even IT sector job even if they are at par in capability.

Actually men and women should be equally treated. India after 70 years of independence, women still experiences such behaviour. Often they are insulted, taunted for being a women. But actually women does more than a men, a yet is not rewarded for her work. She has the ability to handle all the things like men but still his prohibited to do some tasks. Really our society needs a change.

So true Shourya! Main reason for this issue is that our heart accepted but humans didn''t. We all know that casye system should be abolished but reservation prevail. In the same case we all say and talk about freedom and rights of women but we don''t apply. The point you kept here is good.

Vishnupriya Saji Army Public School, PRTC

Absolutely right! Crimes and discrimination against women is the major problem in the society. Even today, in the rural areas, people still regard girls as a curse to them. This is all because of illiteracy. People try to suppress the women in their own families especially in the poorer families, the girls in these families have hardly any opportunities to exhibit their talent in front of the world.

Yes, it''s right .any family without a son thinks that our family is incomplete without it.They think that it can be a successful man in the society,a head of family and ''sahara of budhapa'' And the men''s don''t do so .they left their parents and go to abroad, and don''t let their wives also to do job .Women are capable of doing everything if someone let them do.

yes shourya, exactly what I also feel. The orthodox mindset of the society will still not stop , although we have become so advance, we still continue to follow what the society says.

Though women are emerging as strong, independent figures in today''s world, we cannot deny that women do not often get the support they need to pursue their dreams and prove their worth. There are still a lot of challenges for women and they need to overcome them. This will serve as evidence that a woman''s worth is equal to that of their male counterparts and they deserve as much importance as men.
