Piyush Chauhan: Should Cricket Be Our National Sport?

We know that our national sport is hockey, but if I ask you to name the top 5 players of hockey, I bet, most of you won't be able to do so. However, if I ask you to name top ten cricket players, then you will do it in no time. Isn't it? For decades now, cricket has been the pulse of the sporting activity in India and the sport that attract the maximum number of youth.
Whenever there is a free class, we play cricket because it is easier, and requirements are less. Cricket is watched by everyone. Nowadays IPL is also going on and most of us are watching it. In all these we have forgotten our national sport. Considering all this, I would like to suggest that either the national sport be changed to cricket, or we should do something that would make hockey popular again. What would you suggest?

Well, as far as the popularity of Cricket in India is considered, indeed cricket should be our National game. Cricket is a game I feel, to which most of the Indians can connect with. I wonder why Hockey is titled as the "National Game of India".

Even though Hockey is our national game not much Indian focus on hockey but cricket is a popular game in India so there is no problem in making Cricket National sports of India.

Cricket is the whole and soul of India. Without cricket, 90% Indians would be bored to death today. The action-packed IPL, World Cup, those thriller one ball-one run games- all these are special moments to be cherished by Indian cricket fans. England''s national sport is cricket, even though people are more crazy about football there. I don''t find any reason to not declare cricket as our national sport. And if I''m not mistaken, I guess hockey is no longer our national sport.

I don''t know who made hockey India''s national sport but I think cricket should be given that title because it is way more popular than cricket.

I would suggest that all of us must encourage hockey as much as cricket. I agree that the requirements are less in cricket than hockey, but still, as hockey being our national sport it too has to be encouraged.

The popularity of a sport is not related by it being the national or state sport, it only depend on how people respond to it. Cricket being sooo popular than other sports upsets me because most of the other sport don''t get required facilities to develop while majority of the money is drained out in cricket.

I feel that sports which are not very popular should be made popular by making them the country''s national sport. More effort and support should be put in to spread the awareness of all types of sports.

Yes it can be our national sport.

Most Indians live for cricket. How many children say that they want to become a hockey player when they grow up? True that hockey is our national sport but cricket is the heart and soul of us Indians.

I love cricket. It is a very popular sport. Even my brother and his friends prefer to play cricket in their free time. But I can''t think cricket as a national game. I don''t know why.I don''t know anything about hockey. But it is good to say hockey as a national game.😅😅😅😅

Nice question, Piyush!! I feel that Cricket should be considered as our national sport as the fan following of Cricket is more that any other sport. People come in huge numbers to the stadiums to cheer for their favourite team. The start of the Indian Premier League has brought cricket to a new level. I am a fan of cricket.

It is my ardent desire that popularity of cricket should leave the country with the Britishers.we shouldn''t think of removing an indigenous sport and making a foreign sport our national sport.

You spoke about how used to we are with the cricketers names, I would like to ask you if you know the names of atleast 5 cricketers who are in the WOMEN TEAM.

I don''t think cricket should be our national game as it is most popular game in India. I think we have to promote other games to the international level so it can be recognized as Indian Game.We don''t have to take other''s game and promote it as our national game, instead we have to promote our local game to national game so other should think to bring it in their country or nation. This will promote India''s popularity too
