Onkarpreet: Are There Drawbacks Of Excessive Reading?

There have been a lot of articles and posts about the benefits of reading a lot of books. However, my question would like to explore the other side of reading books, the bad ones. Are there any disadvantages of reading a lot? As a student, is it good to spend all the time reading? Isn't it a waste of time to read during school days? On Quora, one Rohit K Yadav says the following things. I quote:

  • You will feel low in in energy , tired and slow in your work after excessive reading.
  • Your thinking , logical , creative and understanding part of your mind may impaired temporarily.
  • Defects in eye, headache and neck will rise up.
  • You can kill the interest on that particular topic for ever if you are reading forcefully without any interest.
  • When you read a lot, your mind doesn't take all the information continiously as you are reading but instead in parts only and you won't be able to recall what you have gone through correctly.
  • A lot of confussion will rise up.

At some points, yes, it makes sense that reading a lot can sometimes have its own side effects. But being an avid reader there are some points on which I might disagree.

I think, reading is good but reading for long will be not good. But if you really want to read, you have interest in much reading, then read but you also need break in between.

Yes,it''s a good question. As we all know, anything in excess is dangerous. We should fix our time for reading like 15-20 minutes a day.

Look, anything in excess is harmful and so does is excessive reading. The points listed above do make a sense. Also, it makes one get lost in his/her own world. Such readers don''t give importance to what is going around them.

Mrunal Nagpure INDIRA NATIONAL SCHOOL INDIRA NATIO

Yes some problems there are of reading for the ones with poor eyesight but reading is not a big deal. just giving 20 -30minutes is enough, we shouldn''t read it continuously or also never read it s so it should always be balanced

ANWESHA DAS Delhi public school Kalyanpur

Reading is all about passion. If you are a bookworm and would do any thing to get an extra hour a day just to read, then great. You don''t need to worry about any thing. But if you are forced to read, then nothing can stop you from being harmed. However, I think that a change of books in between would be great.

actually physically speaking readig is rather harmful activity to indulge in as it causes impairment of physical and emotinal link up which causes emotions to gradually wash away from one''s body . it also physical detoriation of muscles and headache. But despite all reading has remained one of the most preffered source of entertainment ,many may come and many may go bt it has and will remain near our heart because we know its benefitto our mental well being surmounts its physical abhorsens

priyanka singhal HILLWOOD ACADEMY(PREET VIHAR)

Excess of everything is harmful. If people could manage their routine and couple reading some good books with routinely physical activity then nothing would seem to be a burden.

SHAKSHI SOMERVILLE SCHOOL (SR.)(NOIDA)

Excessive reading is really injurious to health. Children like me start to imagine those fake or heroic things which are virtually true. Fictions deviate our mind from focusing on one particular thing

NIRMAY CHAUDHRY DAV PUB SCH SHRESHTRA VIHAR

It can lead to lots of confusion as one can be called book worm too

SIMRAN BENDALE Sanskriti School, Pune

My personal views say that reading is a part of study. And the more you study the more you learn. It wouldn''t create confusion if you''re smart enough! It would instead increase your reading and memory capacity

Ayushi Pandey LILAVATI BAI PODAR (A)-SCRUZ

This is a good question. But I beg to differ. According to me, reading is never excessive. One''s knowledge only burgeons more while devouring a book or a novel.

Panchami.M K L E Society School, Nagarbhavi

Being a book worm myself I believe that definitely it is not a waste of time to read books in fact it updates one''s knowledge and who can better absorb emotions that books do?

Megha Praveen PRESIDENCY SCHOOLHMT LAYOUT

I surely agree that reading too much is certainly not a great thing. If you spend all your time reading, you might feel lonely.

Akshita Pandey LILAVATI BAI PODAR (A)-SCRUZ

There are no drawbacks of excessive reading as reading provides us with knowledge. We receive truckloads of information. We are never bored or sad in the company of books. It is rightly said that a book is a man''s best friend.
