Mehul: Is Feminism Anti-men?

She was tied there, struggling to speak, gasping for every breath. Each breath was a step closer to death. Death of hopes and ambitions.

What’s the first thing that crosses your mind when one says ‘feminism’? A picture of women fighting illogically on television debates or man-haters spreading misandry.  But that isn’t even close to what feminism is. Feminism is a belief that both sexes are equal. It is a movement towards a gender-equal and unbiased society. But recently feminism has gained a negative connotation. A feminist is a man or woman who supports gender equality.

The feminist ideology has two aspects. The first is about women’s and men’s rights. Their point of equilibrium is where feminism lies. We have all grown up in a patriarchal society. Women are told they can’t make it and face innumerous hurdles in their path. But, still women have shown the world their strength. Mary Kom, the Phogat sisters, Oprah Winfrey, Angela Markel and Theresa May are women who have broken all stereotypes and emerged victorious.

The other aspect is the repercussions on men. Patriarchy hurts men too. Gender roles burden them. The pressure of being the bread winner takes a mental toll. Men are taught to be emotionally unresponsive. They aren’t able to talk about their feelings because they are taught not to.

Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. as well as strong. If we stop defining each other by what we are not, and start defining ourselves by who we are, we can all be freer.

Why only women fight for their equality ? Why not a men. Nowadays it''s not unsafe even to walk on roads . As girls have to hear a lot of comments on their appearance and personality . To stop these undeserved comments ,we need the entire groups support . In Tamil Nadu when there was a mass movement to support jallikatu ,which is played by men, many women across the state participated. So it does not depend upon gender, but depends on where the truth lies and where the support is needed.

it is truly said by Emma Watson that Feminism these days is more about man hating. I believe that feminism should be about achieving equality for both the sexes and it is not possible by trying to influence the adults. Rather the younger generation, the youth of the country should be encouraged to fight for the cause. One person cannot change the world, it takes combined effort to bring about a revolution so the youth has to fight, not for women''s superiority but for equality.
