Laavanya: Is The Government Doing Enough To Curb Air Pollution?

What is the first word that rings in your head when you think about gas chamber if its Delhi then you are on the right track. For Delhi winter comes with a ton of problems, first comes stubble burning, then comes Diwali, then comes air purifiers and a lot of asthma pumps.

The air pollution in Delhi is primarily caused due to industrial waste and vehicles. Around 80,000 trucks ply the roads of Delhi, most of them old trucks burning diesel and kerosene. These, added to the power plants that are located within city limits are the major causes of air pollution in Delhi. Stubble burning is another big factor. The loans given by government to these farmers are inadequate for alternating methods of farming.

Land reform laws have been enacted more than 40 years ago, but their implementation is inadequate. The cost of providing every village a stubble cutting and disposing machines would not cost the nation more than the cost of one Raphael aircraft. Approximately, 60 % of Delhi’s population undergoes treatment in government hospitals as they cannot bear the cost of treatment in private hospitals.

According to a study done in AIIMS if the population of Delhi were to remain in this condition for more than seven years they would certainly get serious lung and chest diseases including cancer. Children and elderly people are more prone to lung diseases as children have developing lungs and elderly people’s lung are weak and both are the worst affected class of population.

Ultimately it’s the government who will have to bear the cost of treatment. Therefore, it is better for the government to invest in the cost of machines rather than spending it on treatment of ill population also safeguarding the environment whose loss is irreversible.
