Ananya Singh: Is Social Media A Threat To Language?

Students have started using popular words of the social media in school. For eg: For good night, they use GN etc. It hampers the learning of the language. I don't understand why the use of the social is still not restricted. What are your views on it?

I''m not a social media user. But I know the message slangs. At times in my exams I write those words. Students have to be conscious on this. This is really bad. Great thoughts Ananya!

using short forms on social media is fine as long as it does not hamper the way you write. It must not affect one''s writing skills in any way. There is no need to restrict the use of social media. Such short forms need to be limited till social networking sites and apps only.

The present generation is fully into social media. The use of the social media language hampers ones writing skills badly because they tend to use such words in their daily life too. This is not a very good thing to be happy about, well it''s a matter to be concerned about.

True! Social media has a great impact, especially on children. It do not increase our vocabulary, instead it decreases! All we need is an ensured use of social media.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS A HUGE DISTRACTION! Though I am not a social media fan, I know many people in my class who are on Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and all those things. On Whatsapp they don''t use proper tense and words. For e.g. they use gr8 for great and TP for time pass.

I do not think that using short words in social media is hampering the learning of the language. I am somewhat an active person on Whatsapp and Instagram. Obviously, no school has the right to restrict its students from using social media. While conversing with my friends or teachers, till now I''ve never used words like GN, IDK etc. Anyways, it was a great thought, Ananya Singh.

Yes,The language today used in social media is not the classic language which was spoken by the linguistics because people use abbreviations and emoticons to express their feelings, emotions and Ideas.Hence, social media is a threat to language

The researchers, from across Europe, also found that the use of gaming holds great promise, but is to date largely unexploited in language learning. The European Commission initiated study investigated the impact of ICT and new media on language learning, across eight European countries. The study found that the rise of virtual worlds and of massive multiplayer role playing games hold great potential for the use of different languages and learning in this informal environment.

We cannot blame social media for this . This is because the style we adopt for our convenience to type. Type good night instead of GN , the issue is solved.

Nice question, Ananya. It is not wrong to use these short forms like GUD9 or GR8 if it is not used in daily conversations. There is nothing in using them. These should be restricted only on social media sites and apps, not in exams or formal converstaions.

Rightly said.

I feel that social media is a great threat to our spoken as well as written language. While texting, we use ''LOL'', ''BRB'' and other abbreviations. But this tends to affect our day to day language too. As we can observe, when somebody cracks a joke, many people just say ''LOL'' instead of laughing. Obviously, texting has a huge impact on our daily communication and our language skills. I''m not telling anyone to stop using social media - just cut down the usage of such abbreviations.

Ronit.R National Hill View Public School

I think that social media certainly is a great threat to language due to the rampant use of short forms .Nowadays confining the use of these short forms becomes difficult and many youngsters write using these short forms

i totally agree with Ananya. Parent think we learn and remember more objects visually. it is WRONG

JOMILIN JOHN ST.ANTHONY'S SR.SEC SCHOOL

New technologies are definitely shaping our spoken and written language, communication and expression. The teens and the New Gens are at the forefront of this language revolution. I don''t support such revolution brought out by today''s world. English is a language and thus it should be treated like a language..if we continue using such abbreviations for meaningful words then am damn sure that one day neither the word English would exist.

Rida Yumn Ahmed J.K.G. International School

Acronyms were meant for easy typing.Although it is efficient for typing but this is hampering the vocabulary of youngsters because they actually don''t know the full forms or the real words. If people don''t know acronyms or slangs they get bullied which is real shame.True knowledge lies in the depth of words
