She Wrote About War Heroes

In an interview with students of St. Mary’s School, the journalist turned author Rawat tells us why it’s important to talk about war heroes, how their families cope with the loss of their beloved heroes and the sense of pride that doesn’t allow them to crack up

How do you feel when the sacrifices of our bravehearts are ignored?
Yes, it’s very unfortunate that we forget the people who have laid down their lives for us. Let’s take the case of Vikram Batra and Manoj Pandey – real but unsung heroes. I don’t really blame anyone for not knowing them, but how will they know if we don’t tell them? I hope this book will be a step in the right direction.

Do you think some of the wars india fought could have been avoided?
Absolutely! Nobody wants war, not even the soldiers and their families because they are the ones who eventually lose their lives. Unfortunately, we are very far from a global scenario where there won’t be wars.

You must have interacted with the kith and kin of the bravehearts. Would you like to share an experience?
There are many such experiences, but meeting Vikram Batra’s parents was very touching. I didn’t know them, but I could sense a feeling of belonging. They had lost their son, but the sense of pride in his martyrdom was overwhelming. They showed me a collection of Vikram’s pictures.

You’re both a journalist and a writer. Which is more satisfying and why?
Both have their special charm. I was much younger when I first started writing. It gives you the power to fight for people’s rights. If you sense injustice  around you, just by writing about it, you can make a difference. Writing is satisfying and highly creative. It makes you happy inside.

What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Keep your language simple and  the characters, realistic.  Readers should be able to connect with the characters you portray. The plot should create curiosity.
