Students Create Gesture Glove

Four students from Amrita School of Engineering in Bengaluru have introduced a smart glove that can recognise commonly used sign languages in India and translate them into voice. The smart glove is called ‘MUDRA’.

How it will be worn: Developed by Abhijith Bhaskaran, Anoop G Nair, Deepak Ram and Krishnan Ananthanarayanan, MUDRA glove can be worn like any other riding glove. Once worn, the glove recognises hand gestures in all possible directions and angles using a flex resistor, accelerometer and gyroscope. The corresponding output is transmitted as speech through in-built speakers. The glove can currently recognise numbers from 1 to 10, and gestures frequently used by Indians corresponding to words such as morning, night, goodbye, thank you, etc.

Difficulties faced:  The movement of the hand posed a challenge. Although the inertial measurement unit (IMU) offered values, these were not accurate owing to noise, so filtering techniques were adopted for precision. A similar glove produced abroad costs around Rs. 10,000.

What it can do

A boon for speech and hearing impaired people, the glove is multi-purpose and versatile. It can be reprogrammed for a range of applications.
