My School Project: The Human Heart

Shivani Kundur made a model on how our heart functions

What it is?

  • The project is about the human heart, its working and its role in the human body.
  • It showed how important the heart is for humans to sustain and also demonstrated its vital functions.
  • It is a vertical section of the heart and shows its chambers, valves, tubes, veins, arteries. It also shows the network between the heart and the rest of the body.

Salient features

  • Blood vessels carry oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
  • The right side of the heart always carries deoxygenated blood and the left side carries oxygenated blood
  • Deoxygenated blood comes from different parts of the body and enters the heart into the right auricle. Then it is pumped into the right ventricle through the tricuspid valve and is later pumped into the pulmonary artery which goes into the lungs.
  • Here, the blood gets oxygenated and is again sent back to the left atrium from the pulmonary vein. This then goes through the bicuspid valve to the left ventricle. From here the oxygenated blood is once again pumped to different body parts

More facts

  • Our heart is divided into four chambers — right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. The upper chambers are called atrium or auricles and the lower chambers are called ventricles.
  •  Arteries are thick-walled and carry oxygenated blood.
  • Veins are thin-walled, have valves and carry deoxygenated blood.

How I went about it

  • I had built the body with thermocol and covered it with a thick layer of tissues. Then I painted in a way that would make it look like a heart.
  • I had put LED lights to indicate the direction of the flow of blood.
  • Blue lights represent the flow of the deoxygenated blood, while red lights indicate the flow of oxygen flowing in the blood.

What we can learn...

  • One gets to know how the heart works and how important it is.
  • It is very delicate and should be taken care of properly.
  • The working of the heart is very complicated.
  • I also included a chart on chronic diseases of the heart and its causes. Regular exercise can prevent you from an ambit of diseases.

With this project I wanted to tell the world the importance of our heart. It was fun trying to put everything I had learnt in my class into a model

Shivani spent a lot of time and effort to make this model. She used her understanding of the topic in the creation of  this model. The use of LED lights was brilliant
