My School Project: Hover Craft

Ranadeep Bhowmick, Rajarshi Mandal, Abhilash Deb, Niladri Pal and Uddipan Basubir of class XII, Techno Model School, Garia, Kolkata, talk about their project

What is it?

  • 'Portable High Security Hover Craft’ also known as air-cushion vehicle or ACV has the ability to glide on all types of land and water surfaces.
  • Propeller mechanism is used to direct its movement. So it can easily move on craters and rugged surfaces. It is completely wire-free and can be operated from a safe distance.
  • It can be used for repairing and security (to keep a tab on terrorist activities).

More facts

  • The technology can replace the old method of using a mirror for searching as the hovercraft comes with a wireless camera to get a proper view of what is under any vehicle. The technique allows  for a proper view of the lower portion of any vehicle to check for any bomb wires or other explosive material.
  • It has a robotic hand with scissors attached to it which helps in cutting those wires and preventing explosions.

How we went about it

  • Materials required for the project were old scraps, like phone batteries, plastic, thermocols etc.
  • With terrorist attacks becoming commonplace in trains, metros, shopping malls etc, we thought of coming up with the hovercraft. With the help of a remote control, the hovercraft, which has a wireless webcam and display unit attached to it, may help in serving our society in combating terrorist attacks.

What we can learn...

  • We learnt about the application of Newton’s Third Law of Motion (every action has an equal and opposite reaction) and Archimedes’ Law (upward buoyant force exerted on a body immersed in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid the body displaces.)
  • The project gave us insight into the world of wireless communication.
  • The project will open new vistas in the area of security and save manpower.

The project involves application of laws of physics and computer science. The students used their knowledge, skills and showed their creativity, which is an important part of learning.
SP Nandi, Principal, TIGPS, Garia

This is a wonderful project  where students have applied concepts which they learn in their theory classes. Their social awareness and willingness to help society is commendable.
