Meet Anushk, The Sleep App Developer

Mobile phone giant Apple Inc has awarded its prestigious WWDC Scholarship-2016 to Anushk Mittal, 17, for his SleepIsle app. In an interview with Pratigyan Das, the youngster talks about his invention, the challenges ahead, his future goals and much more…

Can you tell us something about the app?

SleepIsle, the app, is a universal application to improve sleep efficiency – it works on iOS, watchOS and tvOS platforms. From playing lilting melodies to help you fall asleep at the right time to waking you up with soothing music, it is a one-stop solution to manage your sleep. Apart from understanding the science behind sleep, the app tells us about sleep cycles, the heart rate, along with calories burned during sleep.

What else does it do?

Apple Push Notifications through SleepIsle help you maintain a regular meal pattern that can significantly influence the ease with which you fall asleep. SleepIsle provides insights that help people to compare their moods and activities before and after sleep. I have also developed a unique feature which uses a bot to chat with users so that one is motivated to sleep naturally. The bot is also available on the Messenger Platform to try for free.

What made you develop this app?

That’s an interesting story. I used to sleep for more than 10 hours during my school vacations, so much so that I was called a sleepy head.  However, my fascination with sleep was not restricted to the comfort of my bed. I wanted to delve into the importance of sleep and its significance in our lives. To my surprise, I discovered that around 80 per cent Americans are devoid of sleep which makes them impatient and anxious. This is a global phenomenon. Propelled by my morning sluggishness, and the gravity of the issue, I looked for possible solutions. Reports from sources like Wall Street Journal and New York Times established that about 59 per cent of Americans wished they knew how to improve their sleep quality while only 20 per cent were able to track their sleep in some way. The next step was to look for platforms to discover sleep tracking and enhancing applications. But I couldn’t find any that were dependable. That was all the motivation I needed to trigger my entrepreneurial mind!

Was it difficult for you develop this app?

Apple’s Iwatch gave me the inspiration to develop this app.  I contacted sleep researchers around the world; this makes the science used in the app completely genuine. SleepIsle was the first sleep tracker for tvOS. What’s more, the app recently released support for CareKit, a platform that allows people to actively manage their sleep efficiency.

What is your future goal?

Currently, SleepIsle is available for the iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple TV. I would like to extend the experience to Android smartphones and create virtual reality (VR) experiences through HoloLens.
