Kid Invents App To Eat Healthy

Nicolas Come has come out with an app that helps kids eat healthy. He speaks about his new venture

What prompted you to come up with the idea of  the Nicolas Garden app?
As a six-year-old, I wanted to write a book, but I wasn’t sure what it would be about. One day, I was working in the garden with my father — he taught me about fruits and vegetables and how they are good for you. I thought many kids won’t know how fruits are grown and taken by the farmers to the store. So that became my topic! Besides, I was really amazed to see the number of unhealthy people around me. I wanted to find a way to educate them about good food.

How did you sell your idea?
Hackathon (an event to sell your ideas to computer programmers took place in California). I spoke about my idea of designing an app for kids, so that they can eat healthy, and they liked it.

How can this app help kids fight obesity?
It will help kids to realise which foods are bad for them and what they should eat. Besides, they can try out the healthy recipes with their parents.

How has your app made a difference?
The app is pretty new so I’m not sure how it will influence people. My school friends are already experimenting with the recipes with the help of their parents. So obviously it has generated interest.

How do you market your app?
I use the social media to talk about the benefits of eating healthy meals.

Will kids now shun fast food?
This app teaches kids the benefits of eating healthy foods and the harmful effects of having fries and burgers.

Any other plans?
I want to come out with ‘The CookTop Game’. It’s a game where you can take ingredients from the refrigerator and make a recipe on your own. You earn points for making something nutritious.
