Vedehi Bansal: Teen Depression Must Be Taken Seriously

Depression among teens is a reality in today’s world. Some of the common causes of depression are:  rising cases of bullying at school, increasing pressure to do well in exams, wavering support of friends and peers, and neglecting parents and siblings at home. In several cases, it has forced students to take extreme steps. 


SYMPTOMS 
  • Loss of interest in daily activities: You don’t care any more about hobbies, pastimes or social activities. You’ve lost your ability to feel joy and pleasure. 
  • Excessive sleep and loss of appetite.
  • Sudden mood swings and irresponsible behaviour. 
  • Memory loss, sadness, anxiety and hopelessness.
  • Sudden obsession with death and dying.ways TO OVERCOME it 
  • Start a journal. Release all the negative thoughts and feelings. 
  • Do silly things that make you laugh and have positive and supportive friendships.
  • Meditate. Exercise. Perform outdoor activities and go out in the sun. 
  • Improve your sleeping habits, eat healthy. Improve your appearance. 
  • Read a happy book. Listen to happy songs and watch happy and easy movies.
  • And never, EVER lose hope.

Teen depression is so much prevalent in the society today. Adolescents getting depresses for little matters is a sign of mental weakness. They must start approaching life with optimism. If depression is not curtailed, it can severely affect the modern generation.
