Shreya: Resilience Always Pays Off

Around two years back, I came down with a fever, cough and throat infection, even as I was preparing for an extempore contest the next day. My parents took me to a clinic where the doctor prescribed some tablets and syrup.

After dinner, I took my medication. But a little later I started shivering severely and felt totally drained of energy. When the situation got worse, I was rushed to hospital. The doctor informed us that I had been prescribed an overdose of the syrup and that I needed to be put under observation and I might need a ventilator as well. But as the hospital did not have a ventilator, I was rushed to another hospital.

There, I was kept under observation in the ICU for two hours. It was the first time I was in the ICU and felt extremely tense. After my pulse, blood pressure and other vital signs came back to normal, I was ready to be discharged at around 2 am. I felt safe in the hospital and was reluctant to go home. Thanks to the confidence my parents gave me, we headed home. By the time I reached home, it was 2.30 am.

My parents decided that I should stay at home the next day and give the extempore a miss as I needed rest. But I had set my mind on participating and insisted that I could face the contest. They had to agree.

I barely got about three hours of sleep but I went to school excited, and gave my honest best in the extempore. To my surprise, I got the first prize!
This incident has taught me that when one is resilient and fights back during the toughest times, then nothing can stop one from achieving one’s goals.
