Shagun Says We're Ignoring Mental Health

  • 17 per cent of the world suicides occur in India
  • 56 per cent of the total suicides are witnin the age group of 10-24
  • There are 2 people who commit suicide in a day (Global figures)

According to studies, youth suicide rates in India are highest among the world. And what’s alarming is that these rates are gradually increasing, rather than decreasing. In a country developing by the pace of lightning, India’s negligence towards mental health and well being, which are crucial components for a person’s progress and subsequently, the county’s progress, is astonishing. Apart from suicide and depression, other mental illnesses, such as anxiety affect many people in India.

Yet, Indians have shut their eyes towards mental health; have forgotten that mental health is as important as physical health. Though suicide in India has been decriminalized, many Indians still believe that depression, suicide attempts, mental disorders are still ‘taboos’, not to be discussed openly. Mental well being is something that affects our daily life, and being social beings, sometimes we should just listen, hear out people once, because sometimes it can really make a difference.

We keep ignoring mental health disorders because we think that what would others say and think about us.We think that mental disorders are to be kept secrets. Its wrong.

When we, as members of society, ignore mental health, the overall well-being of our lives is hindered. There is a void, and it leaves us with the desire to be desired. We are all unique and we have something to offer to one another, but when we ignore our own mental and emotional health we stop attempting a lot of things that make us human. Things like smiling, laughing, socializing, eating, all get put on the back burner. So, it''s very important to look ones mental health.

We ignore the mental health of the society thinking that we cannot do anything and if we do also ''that does not make a difference'' We think but it actually does . Its not good keeping secrets

These days children being the influenced with the technology and the society think more. They do stress themselves for unwanted things, because they couldn''t differentiate which is important and which is not. They aren''t taken more care. They are trying to just close their worries and not solve it. We confuse both physical and mental issues. We don''t know it''s impatcts. This has to be taken seriously and solved by the people around the small buds.

We have been ignoring mental health , especially students. Nowadays students just want ro pass anyhow and forget that they need to give some attention to themselves.

I believe that there are a number of reasons: lack of communication between parents and children , because children need to understand that their parents can help them. Secondly, peer pressure among friends is increasing in both schools and on social media. Plus, trolling on social media is a huge factor contributing to suicidal tendencies of today''s teens. However it is absolutely not being ignored. In my school, our teachers are very supportive and help us to understand topics such as

(Continued) bullying and depression and are very frank with us. I suppose we should surround ourselves with positive people and take pleasure in small things in life.

Mental health is something that requires peace and in the metropolitan life we all live , Finding peace is nearly impossible. But we must try to find calm in the chaos, We as children must listen to musician, meditate and spend quality time with our family. I think if everybody lives with harmony and peace mental health would be good by itself. I think all of us must say "Dear Stress, Let''s breakup "

I appreciate the facts mentioned above but, I personally feel it is imperative that we figure out and curb down the low hanging fruits first ie. the reasons of why people especially Gen Z commit suicide.

The perfect reason behind mental health problems is having stress of home works and school studies. The problem of mental health can also be mobile phones and continuous use of gadgets. The child''s mind can be diverted because of excess technology.

To be honest, a majority of the schools in india feign ignorance over topics such as mental illnesses and what causes them. Not just schools but parents of the victims themselves practice a tendency of reverting the repercussions of the problems back to the children themselves, increasing the burden they carry in their hearts and mind and increasing chances of spreading the illnesses influence on other various aspects of their life. It is a problem which is often seen but not acknowledged.
