Nehal: Football Fever Gripped Us All

They say it's been hard for players whose favourite teams have lost, and that's true. I've even seen a few break down. But hey, what about us? It's not been easy for us either. From hearing names that even our bowls of alphabet soup can't dream up of to hearing the incantation "It's coming home!", all I can do is sit and wonder if it's called football or soccer (Which one is it by the way?).

I've seen friendships deteriorate and strange alliances build. People asked me whom did I support, Croatia or France, and I stand wondering if I should say I don't care! without a football being thrown at me.

Anyway I asked a friend of mine if I should watch it even if I don't know a thing about football and he stared at me as if I asked what's one football plus another football.

Here's the gist of what he and a few others told me: 1) You must watch FIFA 2) Leaving tests and taking leaves are totally acceptable 3) It's best to watch with friends 4) Keep a box of tissues and a horn at hand not if, but when your voice fails 5) Be on best terms with your neighbours, and inviting them is even better 6) FIFA is really amazing. You can argue that there's no point now, as its already over.

That's true but hey, you can use it four years later (I had to Google that up). It doesn't matter if you like football or not, it's a fever. You can't deny it when you look at a fan. Crazy fractured eyes that look like footballs themselves, flushed cheeks that are redder than some of the flags (Are there any red ones?), and sweatier than the players on TV.

Like all the fans of teams that lost, we all know one thing. If you can't beat them, join them. See you in four years. We have to Google up a lot of stuff by then.

Yes, it is obviously true that FIFA World Cup has disturbed studies and sleeps of many football lovers in India. The matches were very intense. I''ve seen friendships deteriorate and strange alliances build. People asked me whom did I support, Croatia or France. If we see the hard work of the teams then I think that Croatia tried its best to win the matches but France still remains one of my favourite. Thought Portugal and Argentina were kicked off early but France did deserve the win!
