Kareesmaa: Jesse Owens Taught Us How To Be A Sport

Everyone is familiar with the name Jesse Owens. A great athlete he created a record at the 1936 Olympics by winning four gold medals. He must have had a skilled coach. But what if I say he had a good opponent who helped him to uphold the spirit of the sport.

Yes, it’s a fact that even Owens has publically admitted. Luz Long, a soldier, was a silver medalist in the same Olympics in long jump. When Owens almost got disqualified, it was Luz's recommendation that made him qualify. A true act to uphold the spirit of games, sport and also to prove that winning is not always everything but participating fairly is. Such acts are often forgotten but they are truly the gems of the world. An ode to such people.

Truly, Sir Owens was a gem himself. He has taught everyone that opponents also play as important role as a coach. Even they can be our second coach too. The spirit of sportsmanship is the thing what he had always in him, even off the competitions.
