Aindrila Basak: Smooth Seas Never Make A Brave Sailor

I believe in the adage, ‘Smooth seas never make a brave sailor’. A smooth sea faces no storms and there are no hurdles. So the journey becomes easy. A sailor who has faced storms, experienced hardship at sea, sailed his vessels over large waves, faced drowning, saved his passengers and reached the shore, is the one who is actually brave.

We can easily compare the ‘sea’ with our ‘life’. Our life is as vast and deep as the ‘sea’. Unless a man faces hurdles in life, he can never appreciate being happy. In times of trouble, a man should be brave, keep his mind active and yet, cool. A person who faces problems in life understands what life is.

It’s true that all problems can’t be tackled bravely. There is a constant tug-of-war between our brave heart and our practical mind. Our mind tells us to think about society, status, respect, but our hearts tell us to listen to it. This is a tough situation. Some can face it bravely, but others can’t, so they quit. Society says ‘to quit is a sign of cowardice’, but if it you think deeply, you  will understand  that ‘a man quits when he can’t listen to anyone – neither his heart nor his mind.’ But this too requires a brave heart because it shows that he had listened to his heart but as he was unable to match that with his mind, he decided to quit.

A brave sailor knows how to tackle his problems, take risks, solve them and move on. He knows when the storm starts and when the water is entering his ship, large waves are thrashing down on his soul, making the ship unsteady.  He keeps operating his steering wheel and tries to save his life. But when he realises that ‘everything is finished’, he quits the journey and surrenders himself to the sea, the society. But the sea knows how brave he was!

Beautiful paragraph. We cannot get anything by being lazy. To shine like a sun we have to burn like a sun.

This is very true. Difficulties and failure help us understand our tasks better. The only way we can be successful in life is by trying over and over again. If your success is based on a single pillar, then it isn''t the right kind of success. Look at all the successful people today - no one''s success is hanging upon a cliff. This is because all successful people push on with a flawless work ethic, work to improve themselves and welcome difficulties and challenges.
