Cope Well With Grief

How do you deal with loss? Is there a way to cope with it? Here are some answers....

It’s human nature to search for happiness. It’s also our basic instinct to try and shake off grief as soon as possible. “Move on” is what we mostly hear as advice as we lose a loved one. According to experts, it’s this bad advice that’s mostly to blame for our uncomfortable relationship with bereavement or/and grief.

The anatomy of grief

Yes, we don’t seek unhappiness or loss. But it doesn’t mean we can avoid it. Ever. We do lose our grandparents, parents, loved ones. No one can escape loss. Author Nora McInerny, who lost her unborn child, her father, and her husband – all within a few weeks in 2014, says in her TedTalk, “We don’t move on from our grief. We move forward with it.”

The first thing to understand is that grief is never a negative emotion. It’s an amalgamation of a lot of conflicting, often polar opposite, feelings that hit us all at once while trying to navigate a world that no longer seems real without our loved ones. Here are a few ways we can possibly understand loss better.

Talk about your grief openly

When people say sharing makes one feel lighter, they aren’t lying or talking through their hats. You are allowed to cry, show your emotions. In fact, psychologists reckon most people cannot deal with grief because that’s the time we are all lying to ourselves the most to make things seem fine – but they aren’t. Unless we admit how we really feel, it’s difficult to come to terms with grief.

Understand that time doesn’t always heal emotions...

But it can take away the sting that is inevitable when the loss is new. Understand that some losses can’t ever be healed completely. That’s what it means to be human, really human. Learning to live with that faint heartache is what makes us reconcile with our feelings better. It’s easier to make peace with grief than to stop talking about it. For instance, when you remember a loved one who passed away and the memory brings tears to your eyes then let your tears flow instead of suppressing your emotion. Yes, make peace with the reality but don’t stop yourself from feeling nostalgic or sad in such situations. Let these thoughts come and go, organically.

Surround yourself with loved ones

Make sure you are surrounded by people who really do care for you. Edward T Creagan, medical oncologist and hospice and palliative care specialist, told ‘Bustle’ magazine, “Spending some time alone is fine, but isolation isn’t a healthy way to deal with grief. A friend, a confidant, a spiritual leader – all can help you along the journey of healing. Allow loved ones and other close contacts to share in your sorrow or simply be there when you cry.” Having a shoulder to lean on when upset helps heal you organically.
