She’s A Rock Climber At 20 Months!

The tiny tot took to scaling the walls of her nursery when she was eight months old. And now, Arizona’s Ellie Farmer, also called ‘The Rock Prodigy’, is more adept at climbing than walking. Excerpts from an interview with her dad, Zak:

Q How did Ellie learn rock climbing?

Ellie started rock climbing when she was about 8 months old. In fact, she started climbing before she could walk. My wife (Rachel) and I have both been rock climbing for many years and Ellie grew up in this environment; she was at the climbing gym watching us climb since she was 2 weeks old. We built her a climbing wall next to her crib which she used almost every day. From there it was a natural progression to climbing at the local climbing gym. She was 18 months old when her first video went viral.

Q What does climbing mean to her?

Climbing is more than just a sport or hobby. It is a lifestyle and a community. It’s something she has seen her parents and others do.

Q What does it mean to you?

No matter where you are, in whichever part of the world, you know you will be with likeminded people when you are in a climbing area. In addition to being a great physical activity, climbing can also be a meditative practice. As Chris Sharma (one of the best climbers in the world) says, "Climbing is like a moving meditation". It keeps us physically active and lets us be outdoors, amid nature, every day.

Q What do you feel about climbing as a competitive sport?

Rachael and I are both competitive climbers from the time we were teenagers. We both enjoy competing or just climbing for fun. The great thing about climbing is that there are so many ways to approach it. You don't have to compete to get full value from the climbing experience. Our main aim is to ensure that Ellie has the freedom to engage in whatever style of climbing she likes, as she grows up. It is also possible that she may want to give up climbing. We will support her in any decision she takes.

Q What's on the cards next?

Rachael has just picked up a travelling nursing contract. This means we will be in a new location every three months. We will get to pick our locations with some flexibility, which means we can do a lot of climbing, meeting new people and exploring new things.

Did you know?

Her feet are protected by soft-soled leather shoes and she never climbs a wall higher than 7ft, her parents.
