Marathon Boy

At 4 years, he ran 65 km and faded out. Budhia Singh speaks to Deebashree Mohanty on his ‘feat’ and why he’s still chasing his Olympic dreams

How did you manage to enter the Limca book of records at 4 years? I didn’t know that a record was at stake. I was asked to run from Puri to my school in Bhubaneswar. I ran 65 km in 7 hours. That is all I can recall. But when people talk about it, I feel very proud.

You have participated in many marathons. How did you manage? It is the hunger in the belly and my passion to do something to make my parents proud, which kept me going. I was naturally gifted with stamina. Coach Biranchi Das spotted the talent in me and turned me into Budhia.

What is your routine? Wake up at 4 am, run for 5km then I would go to school. The moment I  came back at 2.30 pm, I would start running  again till it got dark.

What about your stamina and confidence at this point? I am 14 now but I still have it in me to run 40km at a stretch. My confidence has taken a serious beating.  After the death of my coach, my career couldn't take off. In the Sports Authority of India hostel where I live,  there is no facility of a coach.

You still dream of representing India in the Olympics? That is the only thing which brings a smile to my face. I am hoping that after the release of the film based on my life, someone will pity me and come forward to be my coach.

Have you seen other athletes and learnt from them? I have seen Usain Bolt run and he is of a different league altogether. He is a great inspiration.

His story

  • Born to a poor family, Budhia Singh was sold off by his mother for Rs. 800 to a vendor. It was Biranchi Das, a judo trainer, who rescued the boy and trained him to be a great runner. Budhia participated in as many as 48 marathons.
  • He ran a record-breaking 65 km from Puri to Bhubaneswar in 2006 at the age of four and found a place in the Limca Book of Records.
  • The overnight star athlete suddenly vanished from Odisha after 2007.
  • Now he studies in class IV at the DAV Public School, in Bhubaneswar.
