What Makes The Habit of Reading Worth Your While?

The golden rule of reading is to find an immersive experience in the book you pick up; so don’t just read because it is ‘cool.’

Move beyond the generic stories: The current best selling list abounds in relationships, love gone wrong and happily ever afters or, for that matter, self improvement sections that you can easily bypass. Instead, opt for Indian classics or global literature that will help you in becoming a well-read person.

Read what you want to read: Online platforms like Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and news headlines push you to read a certain author, title or genre, which is quite a skewed way of reading. Experiment a bit, read what you want to and not necessarily what everyone else wants you to read. The thumb rule should be to pick a book that demands your focus and encourages you to explore the depth of your own personality.

Reading must and will improve your language: Reading is an effortless way to improve your vocabulary, spelling, and grammatical proficiency.  Moreover, it will help you avoid egregious spelling mistakes. Erstwhile greats like Ernest Hemmingway, Joseph Conrad, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Kurt Vonnegut, or more recent ones like Junot Díaz, Zadie Smith, Khaled Hosseini are excellent storytellers. While reading, keep a good unabridged dictionary or the Oxford English Dictionary handy. Stop whenever necessary... not just to smell the roses, but more importantly to look up complex words and phrases.

Be a part of a global conversation: Whether it’s Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s surrealism or Jane Austen’s Victorian era, you are opening the doors to works that are celebrated globally. Reading helps you connect with people with vastly different cultures and geographical locations and discover interesting facts.

Rise above genres: Books help you cross the barriers of age, location and experience. Traditionally horror, science fiction, inspirational accounts, mystery and romance are top selling genres. All the more reason to try different genres like magic realism, modern (and classical) literary fiction.

For the experience: Let’s face it. Life is short and you don’t have time to experience everything. So if hitchiking from China to India (via Sinkiang and Tibet) is not your thing, you can experience it from the way Vikram Seth describes it in his book ‘From Heaven Lake.’ You don’t need to go live in Afghanistan to know how war has affected the nation. Reading   Khaled Hosseini’s ‘Kite Runner’ will get you as close as you can to understanding the hardships faced by the Afghan people.
