Top Feminists In The Literary World

Feminism at its core is a movement to celebrate women and empower them. It is a term that is more often misunderstood than not – but literature has given us many strong-headed heroines who have rebelled against the norm and taught us that the role of the woman in modern times is greater than we imagine.

Hermione Granger (Harry Potter series)
Now let’s keep those wands down, Ginny Weasley fans. While the dear Weasley girl is a feminist too, it is Hermione who represents the principles truly. A muggle born in a hoard of pureblood, usually misogynistic gits, Hermione is standing proof of the fact that if they get down to it, witches can be just as powerful as wizards.

Rosalind (As You Like It)
In times when all that was expected of women was to be beautiful and obedient to the whims and fancies of men, Rosalind stood out for not compromising on her principles.

Beatrice (Much Ado About Nothing)
With her love for her cousin and the importance she devotes to her principles, Beatrice is the ideal woman. Her battles of wit with Benedick, her straightforwardness and her refusal to ‘take a husband’ for the sake of it, endeared her to feminists worldwide.

Tuppence Beresford (Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence series)
Super detective, super woman, hat-lover and the apple of her darling husband’s eye, Tuppence is the woman we all fell in love with and the woman we all should look up to. Time and time again, she took on gruelling chases and challenges and in doing so, stamped her individuality onto the success of the detective agency she ran with her husband.

Jo March (Little Women)
The most outspoken, brash and bold March woman, Jo refused to bend into the societal mould of a woman. Her sheer determination to achieve and live her dreams made her exemplary.
