Facebook Live Q&A Session: 11 Things Mark Zuckerberg Said

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg held his very first ‘Live Q&A’ video session with users and fans on his Facebook profile. In the hour long live video session, Zuckerberg talked about matters that concern him the most, the importance of connecting people and the power of internet, education and more.

Zuckerberg gave a sneak peek into the future of Facebook, and what it could be decades from now. He also had entrepreneurship advice to share with budding entrepreneurs, and how Facebook could change the way people interact through virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

Want to know more? Here are the highlights from Mark Zuckerberg’s very first live video.

1. Social media to connect people and work for world peace
Zuckerberg commenced the Live Q&A video session by highlighting the importance of being connected. He said that he believes social media can help find solutions to humanity’s problems and achieve world peace. “One of the things that I am very proud of that our community does is that, whenever, there is a tragedy around the world, we always find a way to come together. Be it the earthquake in Nepal, where our community raised money to help victims. Last week, we saw that again. So, many people have expressed support...for the victims in Orlando,” he said.

2. Top voted question answered - Facebook folders to store information
Zuckerberg answered the top voted (with most likes) question which was related to Facebook providing online folders in future, which could be used to store posts or other relevant information. Zuckerberg answered that Facebook is already working on such feature. He also shared that Facebook is working on Groups, with similar set of features.

3. Personalized education
Zuckerberg said that education is something he really cares about, and feels that personalized education is more effective. This can be teaching people via games, videos and other interactive ways. “People can learn up to 50% more with personalised learning,” Zuckerberg said.

4. Facebook eyes VR and AI
The Facebook CEO said that the company is looking at artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) technologies to better the overall experience of what people share on Facebook. Zuckerberg said he wants to make the experience more real for users, so that people can exactly feel what others are sharing.

5. AI to ‘read’ photos to the blind
One of the ways Facebook is looking at using artificial intelligence is by helping the blind feel photos shared on Facebook. Bots will ‘read’ out the contents of the photos along with their location and then make a story out of it. This way, visually impaired users can experience images too.

6. AI to enable subtitles in videos
With artificial intelligence, Facebook intends to automatically add subtitles in real-time to all the videos, including live videos. Facebook’s technology can listen and generate real-time subtitles which will allow people to read and know what the videos are all about, even without playing the embedded audio stream(s) in them.

7. VR in Facebook
Starting with 360 photos, Facebook will slowly integrate more VR features into its offerings. Zuckerberg said that he believes that people should be able to feel the photographs and videos that people post on their profiles, without travelling to that place in reality. “We want to deliver that feeling like you there with someone always,” he said.

8. Facebook will be free, always
Zuckerberg re-assured the users again that they will never, ever have to pay for using Facebook. The service would always be free.

9. Facebook wants to post raw emotions of users
Zuckerberg said he has an idea of people posting exactly what they are thinking. It sounds a bit like science fiction, but the Facebook CEO said that it might as well become a reality in the future, citing research reports. “We want to know what exactly you are thinking, so that you can share it on Facebook,” he said.

10. What would Zuckerberg do, if he had to start over from scratch again?
In reply to this question, he said, “If you dropped me in the middle of a jungle or desert, I will get out of that first and think about connecting people.” However, Zuckerberg mentioned that this time, he would do it via a mobile app and not a website.

11. Advice for entrepreneurs
“It is all about what change you want to make in the world,” Zuckerberg said. According to him, the biggest mistake people make is that they open a company first, without thinking about the change they would want it to bring about in the world.
