8 Actors Of Indian Origin Who Made It Big In H-Wood

A lot has been said about Bollywood stars grabbing eyeballs and roles in Hollywood but before these stars came into the fore; there were many actors of Indian origin who had already created a mark in tinsel town. Deebashree Mohanty brings you a list that will leave you awestruck!

 

1. Kal Penn 


From ‘Harold and Kumar’ to guest appearances in the series ‘How I Met Your Mother’, Kalpen Suresh Modi is arguably the most popular Indian faces in Hollywood today. Kal Penn as he is popularly known as guarantees a box office hit the moment he signs on the dotted line. But a mere hit is not enough for this tall, dark and handsome actor. Penn makes sure he’s critically acclaimed as well. It is projects like ‘The Namesake’ that made him an instant hit with the masses. 

2.Dev Patel


Born in Harrow London, Dev Patel started off modestly with a band but he rose to stardom after Danny Boyle’s blockbuster ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. He tells us that he chooses his scripts very carefully. But the maverick actors still pines for meaty TV roles such as the HBO series, ‘The Newsroom, and Skins’. Patel's fans are eagerly looking forward to watching him in his new movie — ‘The Lion.’ An upcoming drama film directed by Garth Davis and written by Luke Davies, this movie is based on the non-fiction book ‘A Long Way Home’ by Saroo Brierley. 

3.Archie Panjabi



Panjabi was born in London to Govind and Padma Panjabi (Sindhi immigrants from India). The 'witty' girl completed her graduation from Brunel University and enrolled herself in Ballet school. "It is my true passion," she told an interviewer. The Emmy awardee is best know for her role in the TV series, ‘The Good Wife’. Panjabi has been a part of movies such as ‘San Andreas’, ‘A Mighty Heart’, ‘A Good Year’ and ‘Bend It Like Beckham’.  

4.Naveen Andrews


Can you recall Sayid Jarrah from the show ‘Lost’? That movie is just the tip of an iceberg of Andrews portfolio. His popularity has made him one of the most sort after actors in Hollywood. Directors like Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino have all expressed desire to work with this 'special' actor. Tarantino praised Andrews for his brilliant performance in the Gridhouse. 

5.Kunal Nayyar


Nayyar is popularly known as 'that face who made the Indian accent cool' through his depcition of Raj Koothrapalli in the Big Bang Theory. The shy little nerd from that series is one of the most favorite Indian actors in the world and Nayyar wants to try his hands in a variety of roles. 

6.Indira Verma



Varma who lives in the quanit town of Hornsey, London with her husband, Colin Tierney, and their daughter Evelyn shot to fame with Mira Nair’s ‘Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love’ and since then there has been no looking back. The actress is also known for her roles in ‘Bride and Prejudice’ and ‘Basic Instinct 2’, Varma has also been a part of TV series ‘The Canterbury Tales’ and the ‘Game of Thrones’.

7.Sendhil Ramamurthy


Remember Mohinder Suresh, the geneticist from ‘Heroes’? Ramamurthy has been a popular face in Hollywood with several award winning small screen essays to his name. He made 'Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘CSI: Miami’, ‘The Office’ an Indian audience's favourite too.

8.Mindy Kaling

Does the name Vera Mindy Chokalingam ring any bells? She is Mindy Kaling, a popular Hollywood face that featured in movies like ‘No Strings Attached’ and ‘Night At The Museum’, besides her presence on sitcoms. Kaling has a beeline of HWood actresses who swaer by her talent. Latest addition to this list was Kate Winslet, who felt Kaling was refreshingly different.
