Grade VI Students from  Jamnabai Narsee School    visited Centre for Environment Education for a half day education trip recently.  Apart from the paper recycling session, a campus walk conducted for the students where they learnt about the campus of CEE and the biodiversity found here. During the walk, there were also discussions on topics such as interdependence of plants and animals, biodiversity, renewable and non-renewable natural resources and degradation time of different materials. Students were very interactive during the discussions and also shared their knowledge about different species of animals.
They were taught about the 3 "R's of waste management - Reduce, Recycle, Reuse. They learnt the  paper making technique which  helps you recycle wasted paper around your house such as: newsprint, envelopes, writing paper, left over gift wrap or other types of paper.
Students also learnt that adding natural items such as leaves, Small flowers, sand particles etc. to the mix for beautiful texture and colour papers. Lint from clothes-dryer is an ideal paper fodder. You can even use colour threads small bits of cloth piece to also add a special touch. Many shredded things will work.
Just use your imagination!

Follow these simple directions:

1. Materials You Need:
nA large bowl    nWaste paper
nWater   nA mixer or food processor
nTwo wooden frames and a sieve
nA large Tub  nMuslin Cloth

2. Soak It
To begin,  shred the paper into small squares and put them into the bowl Let soak over night

4. Turn it into Pulp

nAt this point, you can also add small quantities of vegetables or plants to the pulp. In this case, mix until the mixture is uniform. (Only a small amount should be used or you will end up with mush)
nTo add colour to the paper , add nontoxic fabric dye or papal puree, beetroot juice, kesuda flowers or food coloring to the mixture. You could also use flowers like mogra to give fragrance to the paper.

5. Swish it in a Tub
Take a big tub half-filled water. Then, pour the pulp into the tub until the mixture resembles thick soup. The thicker the mixture, the thicker your paper will be. Place the frame in and Shake it from side to side to distribute the pulp evenly until it makes a sheet of paper.

6. Drain, Place It In a Mold
Take the paper pulp and frame out of the tub. The other border frame on top. Hold both frames and turn the paper 180 degrees on to the clean frame.

7. Let It Dry
Place the frames horizontally and let it drip dry, or turn it over onto a cloth to dry

8. Left Overs
