The Bye Bye Man Movie Review

Nihit Bhave, TNN, Updated: Jan 19, 2017, 12.48 PM IST
CRITIC'S RATING: 2.0/5

STORY: Elliot, Sasha and John have found a new house away from their college campus. And they have a fourth roommate that they don’t yet know about: the Bye Bye Man!

REVIEW: Here’s the thing about boogeymen and monsters in the closet: they’re only scary till you are nine-or-so years old.

Elliot (Douglas Smith) isn’t scared of them either. So when his girlfriend Sasha (Cressida Bonas) complains about strange noises in the house and brings a friend over to burn some sage, he laughs it off. His roommate and best friend John (Lucien Laviscount) then dates a medium, who senses that “something is coming” for them.

Much of the screen-time is wasted in setting up the most stereotypical horror-movie plot ever: new occupants in a haunted house trying to figure out who is haunting them. Here, the ghost of honour is a mysterious entity called the Bye Bye Man whose name must not be said out loud. For once he hears his name, he comes to torture and kill his victims.

The Bye Bye Man starts out interestingly enough, but quickly jumps genres from college-horror to cheesy slasher film. It even half-heartedly tries to be a psychological thriller. But it fits neither of those sub-genres convincingly. It has a painfully unoriginal story, uses jump scares and sound effects to startle you, and above all else, just isn’t scary. It unfolds like a ghost story that you’ve heard a dozen times over bonfires. Add to that, a suspiciously Voldemort-like character (the Bye Bye Man is a pale, bald man whose name must not be uttered).

If you’re in the mood to get scared this weekend, you’d have better luck surfing the news channels.
