Leading By An Example

Gurvinder Sohi, Principal, GD Goenka Public School, Paschim Vihar talks about the leadership qualities that makes a teacher a principal and head of the institution

The principal of a school is one of the key influencing factors impacting the functioning and standing of the school. She should be a leader of the first order, with undeniable caliber, temperament and drive to spearhead an institution and steer it in alignment with the shared vision of all stakeholders.  The principal has to be playing an active role in school and should be aware of all that goes on in school without having to depend on anyone's feedback or account. She must be an energetic, vigilant, much seen and heard person and also be observant herself, besides being a good, unprejudiced, intelligent listener and analyst. She should be one moment on the ground floor and next reach the top floor; nothing about the pulse of the school should miss her. She should be known for her commitment, hard work, character uprightness and fairness. Creating a healthy work ethos and genial camaraderie among staff as well as motivating and training the staff for optimum and quality work in school should be her constant endeavor. She herself needs to be a pleasing humane entity, setting a positive aura within and about the school.  She must emphasize on constant professional development and lead by example, remaining abreast with innovations and trends in education. She should be the pioneer of progress of the school, deftly mapping and executing developmental projects. She should have clearly defined efficient administrative and academic systems in place. She should also have a direct connect with students as well as parents; always seen as a formidable yet approachable authority at whose level all issues reach an amicable and logical final solution to the satisfaction of all.
