Legendary Guitar Riffs

Love acoustics? Then you will love this feature on the most popular guitar riffs (short, repeated phrases in music) of all time.

Band: Guns and Roses
song: Sweet child O’ mine
Riff to watch out for: 0:00 - 0:30
The song features some of the most globally popular riffs of all time. It opens with a treble heavy riff that plays throughout the duration in slight variation along with the vocals. Slash, the lead player for the song wrote this 1988 hit which is loved by many even today. The song was released in 1987 and became a #1 hit in America for two weeks. It ranks #37 in ‘Guitar World’ magazine’s under-100 greatest guitar solos of all time.

Band: Led Zeppelin
song: Whole lotta love
Riff to watch out for: 0:00 - 0:33
Led Zeppelin was known for their hard rock songs in 1970s. ‘Whole lotta love’ starts off with a bass riff and then merges with vocals dissolving into a free jazz-like break accompanied by a Theremin solo and a drum solo. The band released the song on November 7, 1969, as the opening track to their second album, Led Zeppelin II and sold a million copies. The song has been ranked number 75 on ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine’s list of 500 greatest songs of all time.

Band: Deep Purple
song: Smoke on the Water
Riff to watch out for: 0:00 – 0:55
The song was released on May 1973 on their album, Machine Head. Sometimes simplicity is what makes a great riff which is exactly what made this song such a big hit. ‘Smoke on the water’ ranked #4 in ‘Total Guitar’ magazine’s feature ‘Greatest Guitar Riffs Ever’. Oddly enough, the band hadn’t expected it to be a hit but it ended up ranking 434 on ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine’s list of 500 greatest songs of all time.

Band: The White Stripes
song: Seven Nation Army
Riff to watch out for: 0:00 – 0:47
The song was released as the lead single in the album ‘Elephant’ on March 7, 2013 and became popular for its underlying riff. This bass-heavy riff can be heard out throughout the song and was played on a semi acoustic guitar, (not on a bass guitar which many believed). Watch out for the part where the drums and riff go together.

Band: Aerosmith
song: Walk this way
Riff to watch out for: 0:00 – 0:10
The song didn’t top the charts on its release in 1975. However, after the single was re-issued in 1976 it ranked number 10 on Billboard Hot 100 in early 1977. The song precedes with the main riff created by Perry and Brad Whitford on guitar and Tom Hamilton on bass. It was one of the songs that helped Aerosmith break into the mainstream in 1970s.

What is a guitar riff?
In music, every song has a sequence of notes or chords. These notes may either recur throughout or appear only once but are considered to be the heart of the song. Another way to define a ‘riff’ is a tune that you would recognise immediately when you hear a particular song. Remember ‘Hotel California’ by the Eagles? You do because of the memorable riff on the guitar.
