Startups Now Teach Hobbyist The Craft of Art To The Cart

Startups have now emerged to organise the art and collectors market with paintings, photographs, coins and stamps available for purchase online

BENGALURU: How would it be if you could browse through scores of paintings and then choose the nostalgia invoking market scene, which has the familiar early morning mist, thus bringing back memories of shopping in the age old market of your childhood? Now, it is no longer a yearning, you might as well buy the painting from artzolo.com, an online marketplace to discover and own authentic art.
Startups have now emerged to organise the art and collectors market. Now, one can buy paintings, photographs, coins and stamps just like shopping for any other commodity. On the other hand, if you are a serious hobbyist, you can sell your work and auction your collection too. “When I was in the West, people welcomed art in all forms. When I moved back I saw that there was a huge gap in what I had experienced in the West and here,“ said Vishal Singhal, CEO of ArtZolo.com.
But, the intention to provide a platform is just the basic step, the biggest hurdle was to convince the very people they wanted to help, so as to organise the sector. “The problem was that the market was highly unorganised, no place that somebody can go and say this is the photo I want. So it is a struggle, because we are trying to build an unorganised market into an organised one,“ said Mahesh Nair, founder of Picsdream, an online marketplace for photographs. These startups provide a helping hand to customers, so as to guide them along the myriad space and also ensure that they get original products. Towards this end, Artzolo provides a certificate of authenticity from the artist with their signature on a certificate with an image of the artwork, so as to ensure authenticity .
“I used to collect coins and stamps too, but there was no one to guide me on how to preserve, how to present, etc. With the help of this platform, you will get that guidance too,“ said Sushil Kumar Agrawal, CEO, Mintageworld.com, an online numismatics, notaphily and philately museum. Since, this whole space is new and niche, the investors think it will be a good bet to make. “I have a strong belief that art as a category is a very specialised and can be sold only vertically. With the increasing disposable incomes, people are looking at new ways to decorate their house and art will be one of them. Now you will get originals across price points,“ said Ankit Nagori, former chief business officer at Flipkart, who joined the board of directors at Picsdream.
