Bob Has 101,822 Comic Books

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Bob Bretall's collection is the largest in the world.

How did you start collecting comics?
Although I had read the occasional comic book earlier, it was at the age of eight years that I started collecting them every month.

Which was the first comic book in your collection?
Amazing Spider-Man #88 by Stan Lee (writer) and John Romita, Sr. (artist). I have not missed buying comics even for a month since then (around July 1970).

Which the most expensive comic you have bought?
I do not like to stress on the monetary aspects of collecting comics. We debate too much on how much a comic book is worth instead of looking at the great stories and characters that are featured there. For me, comic books are not an investment, neither am I here to make money — I have a regular job that pays the bills. I’m never going to sell any of my comics.

Who's your favourite comic character?
It has to be Spider-Man, since his is the character who got me into collecting comics. Only about 25 per cent of the comics I read now are super-hero comics.

How do you keep track of the comic collection?
I use the ComicBase software and have been doing so for many years. It works best for my collection. When I finish reading a comic, I put it in a box. When the box is full, then comes the task of putting the comics in alphabetical order and entering the names into database along with the details of the box. This makes it fairly easy to find any comic in my collection. I also used the software when we were verifying my collection for Guinness. There were a lot of random books that were ‘called’ out to verify that I really had all the comics I claimed to have. When the Guinness authorities said, ‘Show me Amazing Spider-Man #50’, for instance, I’d go to the box it was supposed to be in, sift through the books in the right location in alphabetic order, and there it was!
