Organic waste which comprises 65-70 per cent of the total waste generated in India is the main source of methane gas that is 20 times more dangerous than carbon dioxide. The best way to deal with this problem is with the help of the ‘GWR — Green Waste Re-processor’ machine —  developed and manufactured in India — that can up-cycle the daily heap of organic garbage of any city into bio-mass fuel and compost, which can be utilised as a finished product for various purposes.

“GWR is a machine that deals with green wastage, which otherwise goes into landfills and contaminates the environment and underground water. The machine can reprocess all types of green wastes that emerge from homes, vegetable markets, gardens etc,” says Alok Gupta, director, Clean India Venture.

It works like an ATM. Just feed in your green waste and the machine converts the residual into manure sticks to be used in farms for improving crop fertility and produce in less than 60 seconds. GWR is easy to operate which makes it a convenient option for all. “By 2016 we are planning to set up around 100 machines in the country,” says Gupta. His project has already received approvals from the government.

Sources of Organic waste

Parks, forests, private gardens and other green belts.

Wholesale and local vegetable markets and residential rejects.

Temples (bio waste).

Hotels, hostels and industrial catering units.

Input-Output

Vegetable Mandi Waste Unit: Processes vegetable mandi (wholesale market) rejects to produce solid animal feed, liquid fertiliser.

Temple Waste Unit: Treats flowers that are thrown into rivers (one of the main causes of river pollution) to produce havan samagri (material for puja). In a way, puja waste is once again recycled for important religious purposes.

Garden Waste Unit: The machine consumes dry leaves from parks to produce fuel sticks that provide smokeless energy. Organic compost can also be produced.
