For The Love Of Strays
A man rescues a stray dog during Chennai floods

Is it a good idea to adopt stray dogs?

Yes, it is a very noble idea to give a homeless dog a home and a family to love. To adopt a homeless Indie should be the focus of all dog lovers. They make wonderfully loyal and intelligent pets. Blessed with a great immune system, their veterinary needs are minimal. They eat less and love home cooked food and can be trained to eat what the family cooks. In my opinion, adopting an Indie is the best decision any family can take.

What are the rules and regulations one would have to follow if one were to adopt one?

If you adopt one from the road, please make sure that all its vaccinations and deworming schedules are adhered to strictly. Once the animal is over 6 months, it would be advisable to get her or him neutered or spayed. Pups that have lived with their mother for up to 8 weeks have good immunity and health, generally speaking. Beautiful, healthy Indie pups are available at the CUPA Second Chance Adoption Center and also at CUPA's Trauma Center at Hebbal. The adoption procedures include filling up the necessary forms. One would get veterinary support for sterilization and vaccinations at discounted rates for the adoption of Indie pups from CUPA centres.

In what ways can students and the public in general help stray dogs?

The first action to take around one's home or establishment is to ensure that all the Indies present in the location are sterilized so that the population is stable and healthy. Under no circumstances should they be allowed to propagate and increase numbers. All sterilized animals have a clean notch either on one or both ears. This is a identity mark of a sterilized animal, as per the directives of BBMP who oversee and monitor the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme. If this is not present, then one should contact the CUPA or BBMP control room to find out which NGO is working in the specific zone for the ABC programme. It would also help for the residents of the area to oversee their annual vaccinations against Rabies, ensure that they are fed and give them veterinary help if they fall under the wheels of vehicles on the streets.

Is it okay to feed stray dogs regularly, or does that make them territorial?
It is perfectly fine to feed the Indies on the streets provided it is done judiciously and keeping in mind, that if they become a nuisance, then the fault is yours !

Some points to remember:

1. Feed your community dog well away from residences, parks, bakeries  and house gates.

2. Try not to make them relate food with you as a person or your house because then they will follow you or defend your house or the feeding spot against people and what they perceive as threats.

3.Train them to be be independent and search for food ( by giving them adequate but not excess) from other areas and people as well.

4 Do feeding of street animals only if you know you have the determination and consistency to do so every day. Otherwise they will expect the food and not search on their own and you will be responsible for their hunger due to their expectations of you as a feeder.
