Feeding The Homeless Home Cooked Food

24-Year-Old Sneha Mohandoss is the brainchild behind Food Bank- India and with the help of over 1,000 volunteers across India, feeds the homeless hungry people with home-cooked food...

How did you come up with the idea of Food Bank?
My family has been my inspiration to do such activities. My grandfather used to give fresh food to local homeless hungry people, then my mother took up the cause and now I am following their footsteps. I used to spend a lot of time on Facebook to stay updated about everything, that's when I decided to put it to use for a good cause. Whatever work I did offline, I started building its presence online slowly. That's how Food Bank was born. Now, we have over 15,000 members in the Chennai group and over 280 volunteers, who carry out the food distribution drive across the city in their respective areas. All over India, we have more than 1,000 volunteers who carry out food drives in their respective cities.

How does Food Bank work?
The idea is very simple, feeding the homeless and hungry with home-cooked food. People, who wish to volunteer for the cause, have to cook an extra meal at home and distribute to the needy in and around their areas with our local distribution team. We are working towards making our country a place where there is zero tolerance towards hunger.

How many chapters of Food Bank do you have and how do you coordinate with the rest of the team?
We have more than 25 chapters in India. From Hyderabad, Nizamabad to Pune, Delhi, etc. We have a founder member for each chapter, who coordinate via WhatsApp group and phone calls.

Have you encountered any problems during your food distribution services?
Our service doesn't require more than our time and commitment. Thus, there have not been much problems, whatever work is done is done from home and then distributed across to the people in city.

What message would you like to give the children through Food Bank and as a person serving the community?
There are people who are hungry and cannot even feed themselves one time of the day. I think we should think smart on how to solve this problem, if not in big scale at least as much as we can. Like Mother Teresa said, 'if you can't feed 100 then at least feed one,'  we may not become like her but can just follow those words. That's what Food Bank- India is doing.

How can a youngster start a community service on his own? Any suggestions to keep in mind before venturing into such service.
It is always about taking your first initiative. To start any kind of service, your small steps can bring a big difference. For today's generation, it is very easy to do such community service since we have lots and lots of platforms to utilise like Facebook WhatsApp, Apps etc. utilising them the right way will fetch not just results but happiness too. For example: Foodbank started as a Facebook group and now we feed more than 10,000 hungry people. Our presence on the social media played a major part in our successful food distribution drives. We were able to reach out to like-minded people.
