Dylan Works To Eradicate Poverty

Dylan Mahalingam is working to eradicate poverty and hunger, provide universal primary education, achieve gender equality and reduce child mortality in society. What made him want to be the ‘change-maker’

Why prompted you to start this organisation (Lil' MDGs)? During my visit to India as an eight-year-old, I saw a six-year-old girl, Madhavi, working in a brickyard instead of attending school. I learnt that Madhavi’s grandfather had borrowed `6,000 from a landowner and was unable to repay the debt, the reason why Madhavi had to work as a labourer. I decided to do something for her. After returning to the US, I called up a group of kids from different schools to build an educational website to assist such underprivileged children. Over the next couple of weeks, I was able to raise $780,000 and help Madhavi out. With the donations, her family now owns a tea stall and supports her education.

How did you get associated with the United nations? I was speaking at one of one of the  annual benefit events at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, New Hampshire, and  someone associated with the UN was in attendance. A few weeks later, I received an e-mail from the United Nations Development Programme saying that they wanted to showcase Lil’ MDGs as an example of youth working toward the Millennium Development Goals.

Tell us about the obstacles you have faced? Initially, I wondered whether a kid like me would be able to draw funds, which eventually I did.

Which has been your best project? It has to be the work started in Loita, a town located in Kenya. This town did not have any clean water, healthcare and education facility. I decided that the people of Loita needed a school badly so that they could become self-sufficient. With the opening of one school, the town boasts of being able to meet all their needs.

What do you focus on during seminars? My talks focus on inspiring kids and motivating them to realise their own strengths.
