Cris Wins Int’l Children’s Peace Prize

Cris Valdez,  from the Philippines won the Int’l Children’s Peace Prize from The KidsRights Foundation. Read more about the boy who has lent a voice to street kids

On winning the award...I represent street kids, through this award. I have got the voice to speak and be heard.

Has your life changed? After getting this recognition, I’m invited to speak and give inspirational message to kids. People see me as someone who can lend a helping hand to kids.

What do you teach kids? More than 6,000 kids die from diseases associated with poor sanitation. I educate street kids about basic hygiene, gardening, importance of nutritious food and doing regular exercises.

Why did you get this award? I got the award because I taught street kids to live with dignity. I told them about eating healthy, importance of planting trees and vegetables. Learn to stand up for your rights, and fight for it, is what I said.  Go to school and never compromise on anything.

Are you special? I do not consider myself special because I believe everyone is unique in their own ways.

What’s your message to other teenagers? Teens can make a difference; always remember that age is not a hindrance when it comes to helping out.

What changes would you like to bring? I want all children who live on the streets to know that they should never lose hope. Having faith in God will bring about a massive change in their lives.

HOW HE HELPED TEENS

Valdez's parents called him “bad luck” and tried to sell him when he was still a baby but failed, according to Harnin Manalaysay, the head of a local Christian youth charity who eventually rescued the young boy. Under Manalaysay's legal guidance, Valdez built a charity into one that raises funds from private donors to buy basic living items for street children. afp
