'Children Must Come Forward'

Seventeen-year-old Liberian Abraham Keita was awarded the prestigious International Children’s Peace Prize for his tireless campaign to end violence against minors. In an interview, the teenager shares his thoughts on the campaign, the challenges ahead, his future and more...

Q How do you feel upon winning this award?

I feel excited that my work in Liberia has been recognised globally. Through this prestigious award, I can take my work further to an international platform and serve as an international role model and icon for children. I want to encourage them to fight for their rights and pursue justice for child victims of violence.

Q How do you fight for children in Liberia?

I got views from children about the situations they encounter in their daily life. Then I wrote petitions, held peaceful marches, interacted with the media and lobbied with the government. I also wrote news articles and launched campaigns or initiatives that sought to protect the rights of children. I also encouraged my kids team to work with me.

Q How have you ensured child’s rights in Liberia?

I was the voice of the children when it came to getting their law signed and passed by the government. Unfortunately, children’s rights has not been ensured because of poor implementation of the law in the country. I have also encouraged children to come forward and speak up against issues that are harmful for them.

Q Did you face any obstacles?

I faced may hurdles in bringing young people together for the peaceful protest marches because some of them expected to be paid. But, of course, there were many of them who really wanted to make a difference. People also tried to intimidate me but I stood my ground. And now, the results are for all to see.

That''s right, every child should come forward. In every little child there''s a talent hidden and they should make the world aware of it. And the parents should even support them.

Yes, I totally agree that kids should come forward. In every child there is a talent that is hidden inside him/her which they have to show to the whole world so that they can earn recognition.
