Writers Who Didn't Care For Awards

Writer and art critic John Berger passed away last week. When he was awarded the Booker Prize, he thumbed his nose at it. When Berger won the Booker Prize in 1972 for his novel G, he called the award “distasteful“, accused the company, Booker, McConnell Ltd, which sponsored the prize, of being responsible for the “modern poverty of the Caribbean“ and gave half the prize money to the revolutionary American group, the Black Panthers.

Here are writers and artists who didn't take kindly to awards:

Bob Dylan

The singer-composer did not turn up to accept his 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature. His excuse? “Pre-existing commitments“

John Lennon

The Beatle John Lennon returned his Order of the British Empire medal to protest Britain's role in the Nigerian Civil War and its support of Vietnam War. His chauffeur Les Anthony returned the insignia to the queen in 1969 and delivered Lennon's letters to the queen and PM Harold Wilson

Le Duc Tho
In 1973, Le Duc Tho became the only person to refuse a Nobel Peace Prize. The prize had been awarded jointly to Tho, a North Vietnamese politician, and Henry Kissinger for the ceasefire in the Vietnam War. Tho said peace had not been achieved in Vietnam.

David Bowie

Singer David Bowie turned down a knighthood in 2003, reportedly saying, "I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that. I seriously don't know what it's for. It's not what I spent my life working for."

Marlon Brando
The legendary actor refused to accept the Oscar for best actor in 1973 for his portrayal of Vito Corleone in The Godfather. He instead sent a Native American actor named Sacheen Littlefeather.

Do you think awards are an important aspect of validation?
