What Should Hillary Read Now

Poise in the face of crushing defeat may be an admired quality but not an easy one to master. In a public appearance after her loss to Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton admitted that she felt likecurling up with a good book and never leaving the house again. Here then are a few book suggestions for Clinton from four acclaimed authors:

Ashwin Sanghi says One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

This is not a tongue in cheek comment. I have always believed that life is much more about dealing with failure than success. This alltime classic pulls the reader into the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the ups and downs of the Buendia family. Absolutely compelling reading that would allow her to appreciate the nature of life.

Amish Tripathi says The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Hillary Clinton has been preparing for a Presidential run all her life. But whenever she has made a run for it, a candidate has emerged from nowhere and against all expectations defeated her. This election isn’t the first time this has happened. Even with Barack Obama, we saw this. Obama was a relatively unknown entity and Clinton lost to him, despite the backing of the entire establishment. Black Swan events are those which in all probability shouldn’t have happened but did. Most of all, The Black Swan is a fantastic book, that must be read.

Sunil Khilani says Fire and Ashes: Success and Failure in Politics by Michael Ignatieff

It is a memoir of political idealism and ambition, by an intellectual turned politician who campaigned to become Canada’s PM and suffered a bitter defeat. It’s a smart, graceful reflection on the exhilarations and humiliations of democratic politics — and ultimately, a vindication of the need for ideals and principles in pol i tics, even if those who try to stand up for them can often get very badly bruised.

Jeffrey Archer says Beware of Pity by Stefan Zweig and My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante

The former is a novel, written by Austrian author Stefan Zweig in 1939. The story’s female lead, Edith, who is paralysed, falls in love with the charming lieutenant, Anton. His private assurances of marrying Edith post recovery are not acknowledged publicly, leading her to commit suicide. The other suggestion is the first of a fourpart book series. It captures the journey of two girls from childhood to adulthood as they battle poverty and violence to create their own identities. Ferrante’s works should prove motivational for Clinton and Zweig’s, a reminder to not depend on anyone else for her happiness.
