Understanding Bapu Through Books

The Gift of Anger, Arun Manilal Gandhi
"Written by his fifth grandson, Arun Manilal Gandhi, this book includes 10 life lessons that we can learn from Bapu. According to him anger was good; he likened anger to electricity – both needed to be controlled and harnessed and used for the overall good, else they would prove to be self-destructive."
Harini Srinivasan, author of ‘The Curse of Anuganga’

The Story of My Experiments with Truth

"It is here that we learn how his life principles of ‘Satya’, Ahimsa’, ‘Sattva’ and ‘Shradhha’ emerged from his childhood experiences along with his innate ability to question his desires and behaviours. His thought process makes us marvel at how human the man was in one moment, and how divine he could be in the next."

Shreyas Bhave, author of The Asoka Trilogy

"In this book Gandhi has opened up about a lot of aspects of his life. Among the vast body of literature penned about him, this book could be the most important – because it is he himself who speaks. Depending on our beliefs we can choose to learn from his failures, or revile him for them, but if we wish to know him, we cannot ignore his own account of himself."
Damyanti Biswas, author of ‘You Beneath You Skin’

Gandhi: My Life is My Message

"One can read reams and reams about Gandhi, but I feel Gandhi: My Life is My Message is a perfect introduction to the man’s life, and also his ideals and vision. It is especially interesting to trace the evolution of Gandhi’s principles. Reading this book gave me a sense of Gandhi’s growth as a person who started out with his own self doubts, how he was able to overcome them, and also how he was able to harness his doctrine and ideology to steer his countrymen towards freedom and self- determination. Like all great men, he was able to accommodate conflict, both external, and internal within himself, to arrive at a peaceful, non-violent solution that would be acceptable to all. This aspect of Gandhi is indeed very inspiring. As Gandhi says in one of his speeches in Natal in South Africa, “Remember, we can only win the opponent over by love, never by hate. Hate is the subtlest form of violence. Hatred injures the hater, never the hated.”
Sourav Dutta, author of Ganesha series and the Little Alien series
