With Pressure Mounting On ICICI CEO Chanda Kochhar To Step Down, Do You Think India Inc Should Put A Cap On The Tenure Of CEOs?

With cases of frauds coming to the forefront, it is imperative for all private organisations to have proper guidelines in place including the tenure of CEOs. It has been observed that some companies, especially the family-ruled organisations, prefer a family lineage to continue for years. A cap on the tenure makes it more transparent.

Work efficiency should be the only parameter when it comes to the tenure of a CEO. Besides, more the time spent on the seat of CEO, more is the experience and more is the ability to captain the ship. Unless health is a concern, there should not be any fixed tenure for CEOs.

Regardless of whether Kochhar gives in or holds out, a cap on tenure of CEOs would set a dangerous precedent in a volatile market and amid attempts to make India an investment hub. CEOs should be given enough rope to achieve goals, not a generic deadline as it will just put off further investment.

Cap on the tenure of CEOs would mean restrictions that can prove to be fatal for the fast growing economy of India. Industries should be lead by people who are capable of leadership and are skilled in their field of work.
