Will India Find A Credible And Strong Opposition Soon?

After a humiliating battering in Uttar Pradesh, where its alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP) yielded less than 10 seats out of 403, less than its all-time low of 22 in 2007, and a landslide loss in Uttarakhand, where does the Congress party find itself ? It can gloat about Punjab, which it has swept, and possibly about Manipur and Goa where it might be able to form governments. That will not be enough.

The loss of UP, even after a tie-up with the previously-incumbent SP, shows that organisation, ideology and creative political narrative matter more than mere political alliances. Unfortunately , the Congress stares at a drought of precisely these things, at a time when a dominant ruling party calls for a credible national Opposition.
Sonia Gandhi's welfarism, coupled with Manmohan Singh's pragmatism, bought the Congress 10 years in power till 2014, but by the end of term, administrative anarchy , a global economic slowdown and allegations of graft paved the way for a change of regime.

It is easy to blame Congress' woes on Rahul Gandhi and label him a failure, but that will not solve the party's fundamental problems.
Congress has to invent intelligent political narratives that appeal to voters, many under 35 years old, listen to their aspirations and anxieties and address these creatively . Its overwhelming victory in Punjab shows the value of nurturing local leaders like and giving them a free hand in electoral and administrative organisation.

The so-called `high command' of the party should restrict itself to ideas and broad strategy and leave implementation to local leaders. Today's Congress should follow in the footsteps of the early, post-Independence party, which allowed a wide diversity of ideas to flourish and many individuals to implement and learn from them.

It is too early for BJP to rejoice. BJP is yet to establish their clout in forthcoming Assembly elections in UP commensurate with their performance of 2014 General Elections when they had won all but 5 seats. 2019 Elections, as of now shall not be between BJP and Congress. After losing in U.P. elections I don''t think that other parties will sit hand on hand, they will not leave any chance to object. I think They will play different tricks to make BJP govt feel ashamed.

Congress way back then comprised of highly regarded political leaders. Today Congress leaders have to rebuild their self esteem. These elections have to be a learning step for Congress.

With people like Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and many more, I don''t think that the BJP is going to face an opponent as good as them. They have swiped down the whole country with their powers in almost every state. No one would dare to fight against the BJP at least for the for the next ten years

Congress needs to form some strategies to make a good come back. The major factor for Congress not being able to establish itself in the country is that the party does not have a PM candidate.
