What Stops Girls From Pursuing Science?

More girls think they are worse in maths than boys, even when they are not. And it turns out that it is this low level of confidence that stops many women from pursuing higher education in science and engineering, according to a new study.

What the study says

  • When it comes to mathematics, girls rate their abilities markedly lower than boys, even when there is no observable difference between the two, the study found.
  • Boys are significantly more confident in challenging mathematics contexts than otherwise identically talented girls.
  • The findings are based on a study that followed 10th grade students in the US over a six-year period.

Despite a surge in college enrollment and degree attainment for girls worldwide in recent decades, women continue to remain under-represented in physics, engineering, mathematics and computer sciences (PEMC)

Parents must encourage girls to take up science and maths, this is one way of improving their confidence.Joining them in schools which encourage to take up these subjects is also one way. They must have the will to study these subjects. People must encourage more to improve their confidence better .

According to me the assumption of women that they are equal to men, lead to such low levels of confidence.Even if a girl is brighter than a boy she always tries to compare herself with the activities of the boy and doesn''t stay very focused, leading to the lack of confidence in her.Girls should be very confidence and never underestimate themselves because the important thing that a girl must wear is her confidence.

Yes its true. I have also noticed it. I think girls should change the way in which they are thinking. Nothing is impossible. And in today''s generation girls are present in almost every field. And teachers parents and society also play an important role in shaping the future of girls. They should motivate girls to take up such subjects and should tell them that they can do it and even better than boys.!

Very true. I feel that parents and teachers should encourage girls and should strive hard to bring out the mathematical acumen in them.

It is a superstition that girls do not have the mindset for maths and science and that they are better and literature and social studies. If a person is passionate towards a subject, nothing should deter her from pursuing it.

Girls should not be diffident. They should know their abilities and their potential. When they will be confident and prove themselves ,surely they would be supported by others.

It has been noticed that mostly girls do not have self - confidence towards maths and science then boys but both can perform equally if girls have more confidence.

Abhirami Gangadharan AMRITA VIDYALAYAM, PERAMBAVOOR

Its not about science or commerce. Its about our interest.Self confidence is something which is very important for each and every students. There is nothing like girls think themselves weaker than boys.According to me, girls are pretty confident regarding their studies.
