West Bengal Is All Set To Be Renamed As Bangla. What Are Your Views?

In the past, Bangladesh was known as East Bengal. Since the country got independence, it changed its name. Likewise, it isn’t too late to ‘drop’ the word ‘West’ and just use Bengal. The state deserves to have its particular identity. Bangla is not the right name.

Aishmita Manna, class XI, Central Modern School, Kolkata

As quoted by Shakespeare, "What's in a name?" If the local people are happy with a new name, well and good, as it is a representation of an identity. But the focus should be more on the development of the state.
Siddhi Chudgar, grade X, The Universal School, Ghatkopar East, Mumbai

Renaming a state as old as the country itself, might lead to much confusion among the masses. However, the name 'Bangla' not only portrays the culture of the state but also speaks about its linguistic essence. The new name strikes a chord with the people and is reminiscent of the literary treasures that Bengal has to offer.

It does not matters a lot as it matters on development of state.Having a right identity is also important so the name is important. If West Bengal changes it name to Bangal it could led to a war.But just removing word ''west''is better than copying little bit name of other place.

What matters is the overall development of the state. If the state is heading in a right direction and is prospering under the government than I think that there is no harm in changing the name of the state, and the word "Bangla" itself defines the culture and heritage of the state

My view is that changing a name does not change the personality whether its of a person, state or country. Though the people do not have much objection on the topic. So it''s not a big curse but i think that honourable MAMTA BANERJEE must not change the the name beacuse it seems like taking away someone''s identity from them. So, personally I am of opinion that the name of the state should not change.

Mehak Verma BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Changing the name of a state hardly matters since one cannot change its culture or traditions just by changing its name. The government must look after the development of the state than changing its name. Even its name is historical and well known in the world thus the government should not change the name or identity of the state.

David Zachariah HUTCHINGS SCHOOL

Since a part of Bengal was separated by the British, the Eastern part of Bengal was known as Bangladesh, so West Bengal changing its name to ''Bangla'' wouldn''t cause much of a change, besides the name portrays the culture of the state as well as the linguistic essence. Instead, people should not concentrate on the name of the state, but the growth and economy of the country

No I think West bengal should e kept the same name as it is there for many years it has become a history . If we change the name to Bangla then it no use having it in India as it will then have name of Bangladesh. So it better have west bengal .If they want to change they can change it to Bengal .

There is no “East Bengal” in India anymore and the “West” can be ped without hesitation. People who are saying that by changing the name we are trying to forget the history of this eastern Indian state are the same people who actually support changing the names of Kolkata streets from “Park Street” to “Mother Teresa Sarani” or from “Camac Street” to “Abanindranath Thakur Sarani”.
