Should World Cup League Games Have Reserve Days?

Will the 2019 World Cup drown in England's incessant rain? Well, at the moment it looks like it. On Tuesday, the Sri Lanka versus Bangladesh game became the third match to be washed out in this edition of the tournament — making it officially the most rain-hit World Cup ever.

No edition had previously seen more than two washouts, and no World Cup before has seen two games abandoned. A game is declared abandoned when no toss happens, as was the case in both the Sri Lanka games, against Pakistan on Friday, and versus Bangladesh on Tuesday.

However, keeping the unpredictable English weather in mind, the International Cricket Council (ICC) could've slotted reserve days for all the league games (remember the India-England game in the 1999 World Cup, which stretched to two days?), and not just the semis and the final, as is the case now. At the presser on Tuesday, Bangladesh coach, former England player Steve Rhodes, echoed this view. "If you know the English weather, sadly, we're going to get a lot of rain. But at the moment, we're seeing some problems," Rhodes said.

He felt that there was enough time between games to account for a reserve day. "I know logistically, it would have been a big headache for the tournament organisers, but we have got quite a lot of time in between games, and if we have got to travel a day later, then so be it.

"We put men on the moon (laughing) so why can't we have a reserve day, when actually this tournament is a long one," he pointed out.

"I would say that it's disappointing for the crowd, as well. They have got tickets to see a game, and you know, it would be up to them if they can get there the day after," he stressed.

Dimuth differs

However, Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne felt that with each team playing nine games, slotting reserve days wouldn't have been easy for the ICC. "If they can put a reserve day, it's fine, but I don't think they can keep a reserve day for us, because after every match, you have to travel for different venue, so it's not easy," he said.

Its always a tough task to keep reserve days for teams. There are 10 teams and reservation of days is certainly a laborious task. One cannot have control over the natural phenomenons like rain and wind which is the most caring factor in England.

I think the captains shouldn''t worry a out the weather a d the matches abandoned. They should think in an optimistic way of winning the remaining matches in a great difference as run rate is key

Its difficult to say whether reserve days should be there or not . There is no guarantee that the weather would be preferable on that day as well but alternatives are always there. Ground covers should have been arranged , postponing the WC was one way out as its one of the most prestigious cricket event.

NO, Because cricket is all about luck , if the odds are against the team , anybody cant help them.

I think there should be reserved days for World Cup as there will not be any interruptions between matches and it will be easy for the players to play at a stretch and they will not get tired again and again and also the viewers seeing the matches with interest need not break their interest between matches and players the viewers can the n also spend time with their family after the match gets over.

Reserve days wont achieve that much. You cannot predict England’s weather so both the days matches may be a washout.

As we know nowadays technology has advanced so much.We are able to know weather for a week too then why are matches getting abondoned like this.Either they must have a report of weather a week before and then schedule it.
